Hear UNIFORM's new industrial rager "This Is Not a Prayer"

From NYC veterans' upcoming fifth studio album

Coming off last year's crushing collaborative LP with Boris, NYC industrial noisemakers Uniform are forging off on their own to deliver their fifth official, and apparently epic studio album. Dubbed American Standard, the album arrives August 23 via Sacred Bones, just ahead of some tour dates.

"Although our new record is best experienced as one cohesive piece, it isn't exactly Dopesmoker," vocalist Michael Berdan said of the new Uniform album, which features four girthy cut that deal with themes of self destruction and his struggles with bulimia nervosa. "The songs on American Standard feed into an overarching narrative with the goal of retaining their own individual identities."

As a teaser, the band have shared the pummelling, distortion-spiraling "This is Not a Prayer," which you hear up above. Berdan says the track exists "in the netherworld between Public Image Ltd. and Butthole Surfers," and it presents "bludgeoning percussive interplay between dual drummers Michael Sharp and Michael Blume."

The vocalist added that the hard-hitter touches on "the internal paradox that I've experienced while in the throes of an eating disorder. It's about how the best I've ever felt about my physical appearance came when the people I love have told me that I look sick. Rather than taking their concerns to heart, I internalized these sentiments as proof that I was on the right track. I was not."

Uniform will celebrate American Standard with a hometown record release show, which takes place August 30 at New York City's Bowery Ballroom. Poison Ruïn also on the bill. From there, Uniform take off for a quick West Coast jaunt alongside San Francisco grind bruisers World Peace. You can see the full schedule below.
