'Idol' hopeful had a nu-metal moment

Every once in a while, an American Idol contestant flexes their love of heavy music on national television, and we're there for it every time. This week, Indio, California, Idol hopeful Abi Carter brought the drama with a full-force performance of Evanescence's iconic nu-metal anthem "Bring Me to Life."

Earlier this year, Carter worked her vibrato hard through covers of Coldplay's "Clocks" and Elton John's "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road," but this week's program found her swinging big by stepping into Amy Lee's shoes for a couple of minutes. It's a reasonably faithful, passionate performance that put her pipes on display above that familiar, crunchily gothic arrangement.

For extra authenticity, someone in the backing band tackles Paul McCoy's additional power braying on the Fallen number, but they're cast too deep in the shadows of the soundstage to properly ID.

Regardless, you can catch Carter's performance from the violently mist-shooting Idol stage — which really wowed judge Katy Perry, and clinched the singer's position in the Top 7 — up above.

Notably, Carter's cover also won the approval of Evanescence themselves, who chimed in on social media with a message of support: "Go Abi! You nailed it! We are all rooting for you," following by the metal-horns emoji.
