Floridian quartet Gouge Away have been on a hot streak, wowing listeners with their modern take on Jesus Lizard– and AmRep-style noise-rock while on the road ahead of their forthcoming album Burnt Sugar, due September 28th via Deathwish. Last month they dropped the searing new song "Only Friend" with it's trippy music video, and today they've unleashed another burner, "Ghost." The tune starts out with a completely gnarly bass line before revealing itself to be markedly different from the group's output thus far, most notably in frontwoman Christina Michelle's singing, instead of her usual harsh vocals. It's the band's catchiest work to date, showing they have just as much of a talent for anthemic Nineties-harkening alt-rock as they do total rippers.
When we spoke to Michelle last month, she nodded to the group's left turns on Burnt Sugar. "The biggest element we had in mind was dynamics," she said. "With this record, we didn't want to turn ideas away because they were 'too weird' or wouldn't have fit on past releases. We just wanted to put out songs that we like. I think that was a major key in achieving the dynamics we sought out. It's also what we kept in mind while making the track list."
Gouge Away have also announced a slew of 2018 dates with post-hardcore weirdos Drug Church, which will run across both coasts from November to December — see those below.
