Band takes on the "(in)justice system" with gritty cut

It may come as a surprise that members of popular cult-fave indie-emo group Mae have a vicious streak, but longtime guitarist Zach Gehring is bringing serious heat with his project Demons. The band will be dropping a new EP, Made in the USA, later this week, and today you can hear the absolute shredder of a single "Lever." The song brings to mind the grittiest metalcore has to offer, à la the Chariot, This Is Hell and Gallows, with an attention to detail when it comes to grooves. It's a six-minute trip through hell and back, each new section of the cut feeling like its own mini-song. Singer Chris Mathews sounds like he's tearing his voice up with each note, matching the guttural twang of the riffage.

Of the song, Mathews says, "'We're all cells inside of the 'broken, rotten body.' Borrowing from James Baldwin, 'Lever' is about aggressively resisting the hands of the (in)justice system and striving for its undoing."
